The end of 2017 is upon us and people just can’t wait to celebrate! Of course this is probably the most popular time of year to consume alcohol. New years is a time to cut loose and look back on all the good and fun things that have happened this year. However, if drinking is allowed to get out of hand, it can potentially put quite a damper on the night.
For many, drinking is a way to lower inhibition and relax. Makes sense right? The holidays have just ended and you’ve accomplished so much, you deserve a break! But the key is always moderation.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a few drinks but everyone knows it is important to drink responsibly. You hear it at the end over every alcohol commercial and see it in tiny print on every ad. But how do you go about drinking responsibly?
Don’t just drink
Don’t let drinking be the focus of your night. While drinking can be fun, no one enjoys a drunk. Focus on the friends and family you are celebrating with so that you can avoid over drinking.
Make sure to eat food and still drink some water
Eating before and while you drink can help minimize the effects of alcohol. This doesn’t mean you will be immune to getting drunk, only that it will help you to not get drunk as quickly. Also, don’t neglect to take a break and drink some water. Getting drunk is a result of dehydration, so if you make sure to have some water in between the beer and champagne, you’ll stay well enough to keep drinking and having fun.
Keep the spirits bright
your drinking as a personal rule. Everyone enters New Year’s Eve hoping to have a good time, don’t bring the mood of the party down to the same level as your own mood.
Know what you’re drinking
In the chaos of a party it is easy to get those plastic red cups confused; one of the most important things you can do at a party is keep track of your drink. While you probably don’t expect to have your drink tampered with at a party with friends and family, it is always possible to get drinks confused, which can lead to the consumption of something you might not be prepared for. If possible, label your cup with your name and try to keep it in your possession at all time. If you’re celebrating at a bar or club and lose sight of your drink, it might be best to just get a new one.
You should never drink alcohol if the conditions are in any way unsafe to do so. Always make sure you have a designated driver, never drink and drive. Do not drink if you are on medications that tell you they should not be mixed. Alcohol shares side effects with many different medications; these side effects could be made worse if your medications are mixed with alcohol. If you are unsure whether or not it is safe to consume alcohol, check the labels on your prescription container. These labels will list warnings and side effects that can better inform you.
