We’re on the brink of one of the most stressful (but merriest) times of the year. This is usually when everyone’s hopes are unrealistically high, and you’re praying everyone can look like they belong on a holiday card. It can be a lot of pressure.

In addition to making you feel like you’re being pulled in an array of different directions, stress can actually be harmful to your health. Just like a poor diet or lack of exercise can weaken your system, excessive stress can also cause wear and tear to your body.

That’s why it’s important to recognize when you’re experiencing stress and learn how to manage it.

How Can Stress Be Harmful to Your Health?

Stress can take a negative toll on both your mind and body. The longer and more stressed you are, the worse you feel. Do you ever get the sort of headache where you feel pressure at your forehead and the back of your neck? That painful pressure is caused by stress. There are other illness-like symptoms you can experience too, such as having a stomach-ache that are also caused by stress. These symptoms are very minor for the most part. However, sometimes stress can also lead to more serious problems such as a heart attack or arrhythmias.

It is important to realize that not all stress is bad stress. Sometimes, a little stress can be healthy. Depending on the situation, it could be a positive, motivating force. The pressure to perform well before an important presentation, exam, or project might give you the push that you need. However, it becomes problematic when you find yourself overwhelmed in stress. It is important to take the time to address the stressful situation and decide how best to handle it.

Minimizing Your Holiday Stress

So how can you minimize stress this holiday season?

  1. Identify the root cause.

    You need to know what is causing your stress. Sometimes this is easier said than done, but hopefully once you do identify the issue you can also deal with it.

  2. Get up and get moving.

    Exercise helps both the mind and body. If you’re feeling stressed, even going for a walk can help.

  3. Eat right and drink enough water.

    Avoid binge eating and drinking. It can be so easy to fall into bad habits this time of year. Make sure you’re still drinking enough water and eating enough healthy foods in between the cookie taste testing and eggnog.

  4. Talk and relax with a loved one.

    It’s always good to get things off your chest. Find someone close to you who will let you vent to them about the things in your life causing stress.

  5. Rest.

    Sleep is very important, but can be hard to come by sometimes during the holidays. You’re too stressed to sleep because you are worried about your finances with the electricity bill those extra lights have racked up, and all those gifts.
